With the wrong RAM, or bad RAM, Macs won't boot... I've seen it happen before.
There are even a series of tones and light flashes that indicates bad RAM.
Sometimes they just sit there with the sleep light on. When you boot it, it
runs a RAM check, and if it passes, it chimes, if not, it will usually give an
error code.
Steve, it's definitely worth a try reseating the RAM, and also trying one
stick, then the other, to see if one of them is bad.
You might also try reseting the PRAM. I once had a Lime iMac that would make a
very distorted chime, and not boot at all. After resetting the PRAM it booted
fine, with the normal chime.
To reset the PRAM, boot while holding Option + Command (Apple) + R + P on the
keyboard, and wait for four chimes, then release.
