Check out the fan. You might well be encountering a shut down based on 
something getting too hot.

The fan should turn when you blow on it. Try moving the blades with a probe if 
that doesn't work.  It must turn freely and be more or less free of dust.

Is there an air filter that's defective as because of cigarette smoke?

I doubt if you have such a thing but there are fans that don't run until some 
thermometer says they are needed. If you're overheating in less than 15 minutes 
you might see the fan try to start well before that.
