Since 1991, I've never had a problem with just using Scotch tape over the
notch. I have floppies still working (in the older Macs) that are taped, and
the data is retained. I'm only stating my experience, and I'm not claiming a
right or wrong in this technique.

Also, buying older floppies that have been unused may have glue corruption
from the bonding agent between the layers. I'm sure 9 out of 10 work just
fine, but I'm just, again, stating something I've seen recently with VHS,
Beta tapes, and with, again, older floppies that I've not used, left in the
package.
