When I first turn on the computer, the monitor has a terrible vertical flicker, going up and down showing 4 images so rapidly you can't even figure out what is on the screen. In the beginning it did that for 10 minutes and then stopped and I could use the computer. Now it takes an hour before it stops and I can use the computer. Once it stops flickering, I can use the computer. If I just leave the computer on continuously it keeps working properly. If I turn the computer off and later turn it back on, it flickers again and I have to wait an hour before I can use it again. So I was hoping that maybe the sleep mode would be away to get around this but it does not solve the problem. I wish I knew what was wrong with the monitor that it is doing this now. It worked for years and years trouble free. I tried adjusting little dials on the back after removing the case but to no effect. Something is breaking down somewhere that has to do with keeping the vertical stable and flicker free. Wonder what that is? I tried finding people from the RADIUS days but unable to reach anyone and ask them about their monitors. As for the sleep mode, this is a "7300/200" Mac Power PC. On the menu is a choice: Sleep When I choose it, it does not work like "standby mode" in my Windows PC running "XP" and appears to operate AS YOU HAVE DESCRIBED. If I choose sleep, the monitor dims, but I can still hear the fan running in the computer box. According to your description, the hard drives may be shut down. What I need to do is take the cover off, put my ear to the hard drive and choose sleep and listen to see if the hard drives stop turning. I am unable to bring the Mac up by hitting a key or clicking the mouse (like I CAN DO on the Windows PC).....I have to hit that startup button in the upper right corner of the keyboard and the computer beep and the monitor slowly comes up and there is an alert box with 4 choices to shut down, cancel etc. On the Windows PC running XP the stand by mode seems to have more functionality. The computer does "go to sleep", the power fan stops turning and it seems clear the hard drives stop spinning but the power supply has to still be operating cause there's a little green light that blinks every few seconds. When you want to bring the XP PC out of standby you hit a keyboard key or click the mouse and it goes to a screen where you then click an icon to go back to work. My purpose in putting the MAC to sleep was to somehow keep the monitor in working mode so I can come back later and use the machine without having to wait an hour before the flickering stops - but the sleep mode didn't help. After leaving the Mac in Sleep mode for an hour and then waking it up, the monitor went into it's flicker problem and I have to wait an hour. I have another identical monitor and I"ll probably have to start using it and junk the Radius 21" but I just wish I knew what was causing the problem and if it could be fixed for a reasonable amount of money. Your computer does, however, draw much less power when set to sleep mode. You're also saving wear on the hard disk. But, might I ask, why not shut it down?
