They're fun to play with. They (the Plus at least) run well with
system 6.0.8, anything later is slow and overloaded.

There's a great emulator for these, MiniVmac, which runs on Win and
new Macs. Technically, you have to copy the ROM file from a genuine
old Mac, which you own, to use it legally, and you have one, so you're
all set. Then if your old mac fails, you can still use it in emulator
form. If you're interested let me know and I'll point you to the
program, and send you the free Mac software I've got. I carry it on
my keychain USB drive, an old mac in my pocket that I can run
anywhere.

The trickiest part is getting data and ROM image to/from the old Mac,
because they only use 800K floppies, which don't work with newer
machines. A Mac Classic, $30 on Ebay, is useful, as it has a drive
that reads both 800K and more modern floppies.

Also, a working Plus or 512K machine is worth a few hundred dollars,
depending on condition, due to the nostalgia factor. So if you want
one to make into an aquarium or something, get a dead one rather than
destroy a working unit.
