I've finally done it, but it wasn't pretty . . .

1. Download the .sit file on modern mac running lion.
2. Put onto USB zip drive.
3. Open zip drive under [k]ubuntu
4. find program called "unstuff" from an old discussion (google search)
5. cd to the hfs formatted zip drive
6. use "./unstuff -m=auto the_download.sit"
7. dd if=the_download.sit of=/dev/fd0
8. open on the old mac

YES!

Then: Discover that SUM Recover won't do a bloody thing without the first disk.

Ransack another room and, against all odds, discover Disk 1.

Think ahead, and use norton floppier to duplicate disk 1--it's a19
year old archive, after all . . .

Norton finds many bad sectors.

Disk fails verify!

Stick it in, and it's still not a mac disk.

Format as mac disk, then I'll try norton again.

Cross fingers.
