D, I don't usually write here but the lazy responses prompted me. Plus
I need to keep my flirting skills up.
I've an eMac I still use and recently went through the same process for
different reasons. You'd use an external drive (as you note) plus the
firewire port (as someone else noted), with an external enclosure like this:

or a LaCie firewire unit (which is what I use) if you want to spend
more.
You'll need a 3.5" IDE hard drive of suitable size and type to put into
the enclosure... then either clone your eMac drive or just copy off what
you want.
