I second that and add that the classic was the worst offender of this I have 
found thus far.

That sounds like Samasi mac. Basically, the capacitors on the logic board have 
gone bad. The Samasi effect or "Zebra Stripes" appears on Macs with 
memory-mapped 
screens. You are looking directly into memory at the garbage that is 
there. Dynamic RAM is built from tiny capacitors, and cannot remain 
stable when there is not enough capacitance nearby to smooth out 
transient power effects.
