It's more of a lasting fix to replace capacitors; and more satisfying when what
you learn to do creates a working collectible, in the 90s, when I collected so
many 9 inch B&W Macs, I would

put the motherboards, after removing the RAM and battery, right into the
dishwaher and run the Pot Scrubber Cycle. I let the boards dry in a warmed spot
for three days and inspected them before reinstalling them. This method staves
off a major re-capping temporarily while you see what other parts are no longer
working right, (floppy drive/CRT-flyback transformer/Power Board). Sometimes it
let my Macs work for years with no other problems.

Subject: Re: Mac Plus repair and checkerboard screen problem

I just tried to start the checkerboard one up after cleaning the ram terminals
and straightening the pins... no luck. Same symptoms as before. I know the
problem's in the motherboard somewhere, since the symptoms switched when I
switched motherboards. I've already cleaned the main board with water and a
cotton swab, after dusting with some compressed air. Do you think the board
needs to be more thoroughly washed?

I recently bought two Mac Pluses off eBay, one beige and one platinum. When I
tried to boot them up, they both didn't work, at first. The beige one was
booting up to a checkerboard screen, no startup bong, and made a buzzing noise.
The platinum one booted up to a screen with horizontal lines, much like the
terminal simasimac symptoms on an SE (also no startup bong). To try and narrow
down the problem, I swapped the motherboards for the computers, and the
symptoms swapped as well, so I knew that the problem was the motherboards.
Cleaning the ram and rom chips had no effect. Finally, I swapped the rom chips
between the two boards, and the beige mac (the one that had the platinum
motherboard with the simasimac problem) started to work perfectly. Great! Now,
I went to try and fix the platinum mac (with the checkerboard issue). I
realized then that this mac had been upgraded to 4MB and the resistor had been
cut. I started playing around with the locations of
the ram chips and the amount I put in, but all I got were different shapes of
checkerboards on the screen, and still no startup bong. Any ideas? I really
want to get this Plus working!
