What could damage the 400k disks in an 800k drive would be a worn or damaged
drive. A 400k disk is best thought of as a
one-sided 800k disk. The 800k drive reads and writes to two sides of an 800k
floppy. To make a 400k floppy, the option is to
format then write to only one side of that disk.

I've always been a little fuzzy on that... so reading from 400k disks on an
800k drive won't damage the disks?

You know that that the 800k drives can read, format and copy to 400k disks,
right?
