What could damage the 400k disks in an 800k drive would be a worn or damaged drive. A 400k disk is best thought of as a one-sided 800k disk. The 800k drive reads and writes to two sides of an 800k floppy. To make a 400k floppy, the option is to format then write to only one side of that disk.
