Mac Quadra 650 being refurbished: I got some Hayes SmartFax software on floppy disk partly in order to test the floppy drive. I inserted the 1.4 floppy into the drive, and the OS 8 recognized the disk, created an icon on the desktop and opened a window so I could see the contents (an installer and a readme file). There was no "access" light coming from the drive itself.
Installation was unsuccessful, but that's another issue. When I tried to eject the disk (from the Special menu, with the disk icon selected) OS 8 ground the gears in the drive, removed the icon from the desktop, then ground some more and replaced it. The floppy did not eject. I tried shutting down the machine, but again the floppy remained inside the drive. After an Internet search I found a posting suggesting using a paperclip inserted into the small hole below the drive. I tried that, with the machine off, but could not dislodge the disk. I'm not familiar with this style of drive; all the ones I've seen have an eject button, so I'm wondering what to do. Dismantle, of course, but then what?
