Hello John,
To reinstall (your) software is the best approach. There is probably
software already on the hard drive which is proprietary and licensed to
the school system but not to you.
However, if you can identify the OS, which would be Mac OS 6.0.3-7.5.1
or 7.5.3-7.5.5 (according to everymac.com) you might google a way to
get into the system.
In any case, it's a good idea to have a set of OS floppies around just
in case. The old Mac SCSI hard drives (usually) eventually fail, even
more likely if the Mac has been in storage where the temperature varies
significantly. "New" replacement Mac SCSI I and II (50-pin, parallel)
drives are not easy to come by. If it should fail and the most
economical replacement drive you want to buy is not a Mac OEM, then you
will need OS 6 or OS 7 drivers for that hard drive. Floppies for these
(like FWB) are not that easy to come by.
You are lucky to find a working SE/30. Take good care of it.
