Concerning batteries, the first thing I do with a newly acquired
Mac is removing the Lithium-batteries when I do not use the Mac
on a regular basis.

I too bought some Mac II and Macintosh Plus, SE, SE/30 with completely
destroyed main boards due to leaked or exploded batteries. 

The other point is the risk of fire especially with the larger LiIon’s
of Laptops (MacBooks …) I keep these in a 40 to 60% capacity range 
and and store them outside the Laptop if possible.
