Nope. The 601 upgrades for 68k Macs require a
minimum of System 7.5.

Apple's 601 upgrade control panel is designed only
for 040 Macs. If you use it on an 030 with 601
upgrade it will only turn the 601 off! You have to
use DayStar's control panel to turn the 601 on
in an 030 Mac.

System 7.5.x requires the 601 enabler on the hard
drive and the PPC Disk Tools floppy to boot.

Mac OS 7.6.x does NOT require the 601 enabler on
the hard drive but does requite it on the PPC
Disk Tools floppy to boot.

Mac OS 8.1 does NOT require the 601 enabler at all,
but on 030 Macs with the 601 upgrade you should keep
a standard HFS partition with 7.6.x or a 7.6.x
PPC Disk Tools floppy with 601 enabler so you can
boot and switch the 601 back on in case of a PRAM
zap or using the control panel to switch to 030 mode.

Installing the Turbo 601 into a IIci changes the
Gestalt ID to match an LC475 with 601 upgrade, thus
Mac OS 8.1 installs without complaint and runs
quite well even on the 66Mhz version. (It thinks it's
a PowerMac 475!) Any idea what happens if the
adapter is used to install the Turbo 601 into any
LC 030 Mac??? (Should be the same adapter as used
for the 030 PowerCache in an 030 LC.)

Installing the Turbo 601 in a Performa 600 will
restrict the built in video to 8bit color unless
you can scrounge up the final version of the DayStar
control panel. Officially you had to send the
upgrade to DayStar for a ROM upgrade but poking
around in the control panel with ResEdit reveals
dialogs with stuff about waiting while the flash
ROM is updated. My theory is that all DayStar
did was stick the cards in a Performa 600 and
fire it up with the final control panel revision
then ship it back with a floppy with that version
of the control panel.

Just some of the things I learned living with a
Power IIci that thinks it's a PowerMac 475. ;)
