I believe one of the tricks was to use the Appleshare from System 7. Yeah, surprising, but it works. Check out the FAQ and System 6 Heaven. There's a section in there about connecting System 6 to OS X. Should be fairly relevant as far as the System 6 side goes. I've migrated most of my Macs over to 7.1 to make them really useful on the Internet, so I haven't done much with System 6 in awhile.
