i realize how silly it sounded, and i appreciate the humor in the 'beanies' thread-- but in terms of actual science for grounding the zappy types,
beanies won't work, but the improvised booties will. i read up extensively one night about grounding, before attempting to change some nubus cards in my IIfx's, and i kid you not, all the measures i listed in my original on 'stopping computers' are actual techniques, that labs and government and homebased scientists keep around for getting rid of ambient stray charges when they don't have the manufactured antistatic frou frou handy to turn to. here's some more ways to rid yourself and your surroundings of static: replace synthetic materials with natural ones. ie, wood flooring is better than carpet, period. bare cement is better than linoleum. cotton throw rugs are better than wall to wall not plastic, use wood. not nylon, use cotton. think zen new age decor: think pier one. bamboo blinds, futon couches and beds,, cotton clothes, lotsa bare wood, moist plants, natural, earthy, quiet. earthenware not metal. rattan. wicker. unpainted pine. paper shades. the more you progress in the makeover, the calmer, more stable and peaceful you'll feel. less electrons flying around desperate for a home. applies to your clothes too- shoes, leather soled, rubber soled, jute, wooden clogs or sandals. cotton socks. cotton tights, not nylons. expose more skin. hemp jewelry, wooden beads, leather, macramé. become an earth mama or a SNAG [sensitive new age guy]..become a natural fiber snob in all things. and seriously, get outdoors and ground yourself on the actual ground for some time every few hours. lie down full length on a ground level lawn, on a natural fiber blanket if you don't want to sit in the grass directly, and drain off the stress, charges, static and buzzing, frying energy you've picked up while you've been flying around so busy. lay on your back. roll over and relax. stretch like a cat, wriggle like a dog. breathe deep and let it all go for ten minutes. get away from the cathode ray screen and get out into natural daylight or nightlight and look far away. force yourself to do this about, oh, every two hours, like at mandated break time? if you can stick your bare feet or bare hands in pooled, or circulating or running water, do that too. i learned these tricks decades ago and it has saved my nervous sytem and my sanity. 'think outside the box'. and hey, you could turn that ankle grounding strap into a newfangled fashion statement. take ankle bracelets one step further [so to speak..]. i bet we could start a line of jewelry, decorate them , sorta somewhere between stirrups, spurs, kinky gothic bondage and charm anklets and sell them to the fried crowd.... jokes aside, these measures really work. help those orphaned electrons get home where they wanna be, instead of glomming all over you! you are not their mommie. janet http://community.webtv.net/mensabrains/BADCODE http://www.anybrowser.org -- Vintage Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
