I do download a lot of stuff with UNIX and Windows, but I've never had a
problem with that.

But Gauge Pro I downloaded from the Mac to the Mac's hard drive.

My file server is a UNIX system, but it runs Netatalk and stores resource
and data forks.  You can even move them around with some UNIX tools.
