well, it mounted and i formated it and all seemed well-- until i did a cold boot. apparantly i have to remount it after each boot. any ideas?

Yes it will take some time, disturbing it may also damage the drive.
Partioning the drive would have wrote a new partion table so the mac would have asked if you wish to initalize rather than format which is much quicker. You needed a formatting tool to do this.
