They are all over the map. Early Compacts require a special torx 
screwdriver (since the dangerous video circuitry is exposed with the 
cover off). Color all-in-ones and the 63x/62xx/63xx series have a slide 
out motherboard behind a plastic door, usually 2-4 philips screws. 
Several desktop models have the snap-off lid design you praised, but 
sometimes you have to remove the power supply or drives to get at things. 
The early mini-towers (8500 and lower) are notorious for the amount of 
disassembly required to get at motherboard parts such as memory and 
battery. Some of the iMacs can be difficult to work on, while the recent 
mini-towers have a very convenient hinged side panel.
