I would venture to guess that what you may be  seeing is "corrosion" on 
the aluminum which is somewhat like rusting on steel.  Corrosion will 
actually eat holes in the aluminum while oxidation in fact puts a 
protective coating on the aluminum, even tho it doesn't look so good.  
The corrosion as it progressess gets a kind of white powdery finish.
