Jim,
Sounds to me like you do have a quarrel with what other people do to
find pleasure or you wouldn't have felt the need to write your note. In
turn, your letter has "inspired" me to write one as well. I speak for my
husband and myself when I ask, "Are we trying to escape from our busy
complicated lives?". Hell, yes we are. "Do I want to spend my travel
and leisure time digging latrines in the rain when I'm already exhausted
from packing in the neccesities?". Hell, no.
I too, reserve a certain measure of sarcasm for "campers" who have
afforded an RV that cost more than my first house, who pull in, get the
satellite dish pointed in the right direction and never even step
outside to smell the fresh air. However, 'different strokes for
different folks'. I kind of thought that credo was the driving spirit
of everyone who chooses to own a vintage Airstream.
We tow our trailer with a 1978 1 ton Cheverolet truck and camp in Forest
Service/National Forest campgrounds with limited amenities to State
Parks with all the convenient hook-ups one could ask for. When we have
electric and water available to us, hey bonus! If not, we still have a
marvelous time wherever we go. Do we plug in a CD player and listen to
music when we are hooked up? Most certainly. We go to relax and
anything that enhances our ability to do that is more than welcome,
bolted, soldered, bungie corded, duct taped, plugged in, hooked up, I
don't care. It's MY get away, not someone elses.
I am assuming you got wound up about dishwashers from the "Dishmaster"
thread here on the list. Before you make fun, maybe you need to
understand what a Dishmaster is. It is an ordinary faucet which
contains a receptacle that holds dish detergent which dispenses soapy
water through a hose with a very 'high tech' bristle brush on the end of
it for scrubbing your dishes. What will they think of next? Sarcasm
aside, they have been manufactured for a half a century or more and have
a very practical use in any kind of trailer or RV. Personally I don't
find my sink a luxurious size and anything that makes the dishwashing
chores go any easier or faster has got my vote. I am not there to work
harder than I do at my job. Another wacky thing we do to relax and
enjoy ourselves is to make incredible gourmet feasts when we are
'camping', but the unfortunate fallout is a multitude of dirty dishes.
I don't want to spend the remaining hours of my day, washing dishes,
silly me! What will I do with that extra time? Well I think I will pour
another glass of wine or mix a fine cocktail, turn on some music and
read a book under my newly installed aircraft lights and maybe stop to
ponder how a TV/VCR might enhance my experience, or not. I tell ya,
some people just don't know how to live!
Best Regards, and to each his own...

P.S. Oh, and Jim, you don't have to foot the bill for anything I have
and I seriously doubt you'll find many welfare recipients on the list.
