Volks (and Asad),

Unless I'm mistaken, the dimmable rear-view mirror was a safety requirement
on USA-bound cars, though I'm not sure what year that became effective.

As was so often the case, gadgets that the Americans required (brake warning
systems, padded dashboards, dual-circuit brake systems, high-back seats,
etc.) were made available to European buyers as Mehrausstattungen -- those
"M-options" -- for extra cost.

I have an original German Owner's Manual for a 1970 beetle (1200/1300/1500
model sedans). It shows pictures of a non-dimming mirror, but in the text
it says, "Als Mehrausstattung wird ein abblendbarer Innenspiegel geliefert.
Das Abblenden wird durch Kippen der Spiegelfläche erreicht. Dazu ist unten
am Spiegel eine Taste vorhanden... ." [A dimmable interior mirror is
deliverable as an option. Dimming is achieved by tilting the reflective
surface. To accomplish this a flip-tab is located on the bottom of the
mirror...] and it goes on to explain how to dim and un-dim the mirror.

I understand it was a popular option and quite cheap, so lots of European
bugs had it. Low-bid fleet cars, like my police car, usually didn't.

Gute Fahrt,

Subject: [vintagvw] Post 68 rear view mirror.

Volks,

Found a post 68 rear view mirror with the day night tab at the bottom.
Couple of questions:

Did bugs come with these?? Or is it off a Microbus as I suspect?

Any tricks for tightening up the balljoint a little...its a bit loose and I
think would not stay in one position over bumps.

The mirror has the following embossed on its backside : I TP RT 192

TIA for any input.
