Ray,

Thanks for the heartwarming comment, makes things wortwhile.

We are seeing a new phenomenon lately which is the disappearance of old
cars in general and VWs in particular from the local roads. Two major factors
coming into play are; new cars available through leasing via banks and import
of second hand (under five years old) cars from abroad, mostly Japan. Thus cars
are now in reach of some people with shallow pockets!

In general old cars are owned by those who cannot afford newer ones. A
purchase of a newer or latest model signifies the persons climb up the social
and economic ladder. Thats the general mentality sadly. Women would often nag a
person to sell of 'that rusting heap' in favor of brand new crap cars. But I
guess this is a worldwide phenomenon.

Lately have seen many VWs being scrapped at the local junkyard. While in
the not so distant past only old beat up cars which were non-runners or had
issues like outstanding taxes worth years were put on death-row, now I very
sadly see quite good running cars with proper documentation being hacked up.
Yesterday a very very nice 70 was hacked up. You could have driven it straight
inter city.

While this disturbing trend means more cherry parts for the early birds, it
also means that the scrappers put more and more on the scrap pile to be melted
away. Lesser cars equals lesser customers which in turn means slow sales and
the storage space being limited poses a problem.
Its been years since I have been searching for parts for the 59 ragtop
project. Even before I had the car I used to collect anything I saw which said
50s. I think I have been very very lucky. Still I have a wish list outstanding.
The www sellers would help and Im often scouring sites like thesamba.com to
drool. But then the daunting factor is the currency exchange rate and shipping
issues.

Tomorrow I d be meeting up with another local VW enthusiast who has arranged
a pair of complete snowflake tail lights. He is demanding silly money for our
local standards but then the only other choice for me would be an international
purchase which would be as expensive to say the least plus shipping head (and
heart) aches!

I would certainly be posting more here. I am thinking of putting details of
the ragtop project on thesamba.com but somehow I feel very guilty as I feel
that would mean cheating the people on this list! The only attractive feature
there is the ability to post pictures to show progress, take comments, input
and ideas. Anyway whenever I get around doing so I will certainly post a link
here so you guys can also follow. I have noticed decreased traffic on this list
over the years and I dont want to contribute to that.

Best wishes and warm regards to all,

Asad
