Dan,

Thanks a lot. I can see how that shelf works, using your description. The
1 1/2" strip of "hinge" felt (my fuzzy gray carpeting) is about 80% torn off
on mine, but I can see how a new piece should be cut. There are two cotton
straps riveted to the shelf; I'll figure where their loose ends attach. An
almost-identical charcoal-gray carpeting felt comes in rolls at my FLAPS.

I'm also looking at the gray pebbled surfaces and trying to picture their
fit, as well as the attachment of the tie-down strap. My recollection is
that, when folded down, the rear of the seatback creates an almost-smooth
floor with the rear baggage hold; the metal clamp strip is the "joint"
between the two pieces that form this floor.

I think.

Thanks,

Bert Knupp

I do not have a web site but will do my best to describe the fitment of the
shelf:

The shelf is original, the particle board shelf should be covered completely
with the felt with the exception of the long end. The long end should have
about 1 1/2 inches of just felt. The felt end acts as a hinge to the seat
back

With upholstered side of the seat back on the floor. the felt end should be
placed on the top of the seat back (the particle board in this case should
be facing up). The long black metal frame goes on top of the felt and is
screwed to the frame of the seat. This frame fixes the felt hinge to the
seat back.

There may also be some cotton stays that attach to the seat back that
prevent the shelf from folding over too far and potentially ripping the felt
hinge.

Volks,

I should have taken pictures.

In my 1970 beetle, I've completely renewed my rear seat, and am trying to
recall how it should all fit back together.

The TMI upholstery kit fit flawlessly. The seatback (rear side) and the
rear luggage hold all came covered with a gray pebblegrain vinyl which I've
renewed, rebacked, and re-bound so they look like new (almost). I've put in
a new carpet-holding strip across the front of the luggage hold, even.

But now I have some leftover hardware and pieces. I hate when this happens.
And there's a parcel shelf that might have been an aftermarket piece (since
it's covered in a fuzzy gray carpeting), but it sure looks original. Can't
figure where/how it attaches, either. It's been 6 years since I took it all
apart, and my memory is getting old.

Does anybody know a Web site that has a good blown-up illustration of where
all the pieces are supposed to fit, be screwed down, etc.? The hold-down
strap is even a mystery.

I hate slowing down on the home stretch, but I want this to look
showroom-original, so hope to get it right.

Thanks,
