Glen,
A quick google search show the 74 came with either the following engine
options (you need to look at the engine block)

1.8 L L-Jet (Engine Code begins with EC), Porsche engine
1.7 L D-Jet (Engine Code begins with EA)
2.0 L D-Jet (Engine Code begins with GA), Porsche engine

For rust I would look at the front door steps on the body including the
outer sills on the body at the same level of the front seats. The floor
boards in both the front (in particular) and in the rear/middle of the bus.
Also they generally rust around the window rubber but since the windows and
you see no rust through you are good. One other place to look is at all of
the body seams.

The other area to look at is the front axle beam. They some time rust where
the horizontal and vertical members meet at the very ends.

Price sounds about right if it is complete (is it a Westfalia camper also
automatics and AC are relatively rare?) you should check www.thesamba.com
to compare.

Good Luck,
Dan
