Yeah Kirin I would say to check the easiest stuff first. As we've already
established, the 009 and 34-PICT-3 do not work well together unless you
modify the carburetor to be less efficient. What I've told my customers
(remember they are paying me labour rates), they are better off having me
install an SVDA and be done with it. Check the timing first. It's done
with a timing light, speed up engine to 3000 rpm (which is a simple way of
saying speed up the engine until the distributor quits advancing) and set
for max advance of 28 to 32 degrees.) If the pulley is not a degree pulley,
then you'll have to mark the degree marks using a template or using a degree
pulley as a pattern. Once you have the stock pulley marked, then you can
set the timing appropriately.
If the timing doesn't cure the problem, then the carburetor would be the
next logical place to look. Making sure the idle cut-off solenoid is
screwed in tight is good for starters. Making sure the electric choke is
not stuck and is actually coming off of choke. It's an electromechanical
setup where a piece of heated bimetal spring slowly brings the carburetor
off of choke. After that, it's probably going need proper adjustment. Any
combination of these things being out of whack will cause all sorts of
issues. My grandpa always insisted that any backfire through the carburetor
was always due to the timing... period. When I tried to come up with other
scenarios, he said, "It's always the timing." So far, he's been right every
single time.
Usually when someone puts an aftermarket replacement carburetor on, it's
because they couldn't tune the original one. They think a new one will
solve the problem (what I call the Edelbrock mindset.) They throw one on
and out of the box it runs better so they call it good. If it runs good
enough, it'll sell. Usually it's some kind of deal where when you first
fire it up, it runs great or it only runs great once it warms up. So
they'll make sure and either give you a cold engine or warm engine to test
drive on depending on the scenario. That way it runs the best for you and
helps sinch the sale.
Keep us posted and we'll go from there.
