Not to be harsh or rude but isn't the point of driving and restoring one of
the most rare Beetle set-ups known to the USA (A Polizei Käfer) part of the
fun ? And educating people should be the joy of being the owner of such a
rarity.

You can have some fun ribbing them while giving them an education...

  1. Did this really come from Germany? - Yep. I know of at least 3 other
countries that were using Beetles as Police cars, Mexico and Brazil was
using them well into the 90's (I used to live there and have a few shots of
me being frisked against one).

  2. How did they ever catch speeders with these? (see #6)

  3. Why isn't the steering wheel on the right? (Tell them to Google
Fridolin for RHD VW's LOL)

  4. Where do they put prisoners? (the roof)

  5. Does the siren work? (...it's old and faint put your ear up here real
close)

  6. Do you ever pull people over just for fun? (yeah I tried to catch a
speeder in a GTO once...he was going 145)

  7. Is that (POLIZEI) French or Eye-talian? Polizia = Italian (come on it’s
not that far off) French eh that’s just trying to sound hip

  8. Shouldn't that be a red light on top? (only when the cop is female ;)

  9. Can you really talk to the German police on that radio? (only the other
ones in Police Beetles and there are only 2 left in the world and they are
not on right now)

10. Can it really go 140? (M.P.H.? yes, but most people don't understand the
damage terminal velocity causes to one of these...)

Cheers and have fun with it, you get a chance to be an ambassador, educator
and smart aleck all at once.

Subject: [vintagvw] Stupid questions heard at car shows

Volks,

Many of you know my restored 1970 VW police car and its story, and some have

seen it at shows in the South and Midwest. Last night I drove up to a

nearby “cruise-in” at a suburban shopping mall, where it and one other VW

beetle were the only non-US-made cars present (out of about 300 cars). It’s

quite an experience. So I am compiling a list of the most frequently asked

stupid questions I've heard at car shows. In no particular order, here are

some of the most often heard about the Copbug:

  1. Did this really come from Germany?

  2. How did they ever catch speeders with these?

  3. Why isn't the steering wheel on the right?

  4. Where do they put prisoners?

  5. Does the siren work?

  6. Do you ever pull people over just for fun?

  7. Is that (POLIZEI) French or Eye-talian?

  8. Shouldn't that be a red light on top?

  9. Can you really talk to the German police on that radio?

10. Can it really go 140?

It's not on the list, but last night I actually heard one throwback to the

1950s: "Where's the engine?" Maybe you have heard a few good ones

yourself. Or maybe you can think of some snappy responses for me. I don't

want to hurt anybody's feelings, but they need some education.
