Volks, I've just completed switching to front disks on my 1970 cop beetle. I've never done brakes, so I took the car to my fixer, who has over 30 years' experience doing VW wheels and brakes. After six months, I had eventually gotten all of the pieces for my conversion kit from Mid America Motorworks (their 301-911). It was a mixed bag. One of the remanufactured spindles was German (with VW logo), one unidentifiable. The latter was missing one threaded screw hole for attachment of the dust shields. The new bearings provided would not fit over the spindles. The bearing races were too big for the hubs of the rotors; one rotor hub broke (!) when the bearing race was pressed in. The rubber brake hoses provided were the wrong type. One caliper unit had an EMPI logo, the other none. My wheel guy quickly cannibalized a Karmann-Ghia from the back lot, pulling a good pair of rotors and bearings, so he could finish the job.
Since I ordered my kit in March, they've raised the price by $50.00. Bottom line: Poor service and poor quality. I won't be ordering a MAMW brake kit again. John assured me that it's the good stuff. As soon as the budget allows this is where I'm going for the brakes. I did this a number of years ago with my daughter's '74 and was very pleased with the improvement in braking. I bought a new beam with the spindles to mount the calipers and wish to buy a kit with stock height spindles. If memory serves me right this kit came from Aircooled.net but I see that currently their kit is on long-term backorder. After some searches I find the kits but am VERY leery of the quality after looking at a video of what looks like the locator pins flexing under pressure and the author commenting on the poor quality of the EMPI-branded kit. Looking at the CB Performance kits - anyone have experience with them or any other kits? Cost is NOT a major factor - safety and longevity is.
