I've done that myself - it's not hard if you can work with small parts and remember where things go.

I've also filed tumblers down on door locks so my ignition key would work them, on my '69 Ghia. If you can figure out what needs to be done, it's not difficult.

Burt, If you have both the broken lock and the new lock, and they are identical, and you haven't lost any pins from the broken lock, a competent locksmith ought to be able to move the old pins over into the new lock. Hosse & Hosse should be able to do it if you brought them the locks.

    Volks,

A tumbler broke insidetheignition lockcylinderon my ’70 Type 1.I
found a good used cylinder-and-key from a California vendor and
got it. Now I’d really like to get the lock rebuilt so it will
accept myolddoor key, giving me a one-key system--like new.

At some shows in the past I’ve seen a vendor who specialized in
re-keying VW locks, and in the past I’ve seen an ad,previouslyin
    _/VW Trends/_ andrecentlyin _/Hot VWs/_. But looking through
mystash ofback issues, I can’t find the ad or the vendor.

Does anybody know a locksmith who mightspecialize in
    classicVolkswagen tumblers and leaves?Specifically 1969-1972(the
’68 was a bit different, I’m told). I can send them the desired
key and the newly-acquired lock cylinder. I’ve checked with a
couple of highly respectable lock shops locally and
neitherstillhas any sets of VWtumblers or plates.
