Hi, Kyle, As I believe Glen (and maybe others) correctly pointed out: No, you cannot swap rear windows to get defroster wires. The later windows won't fit.
However: in the 1960s and 1970s, the British firm Lucas made a "window demister" that worked very well. It was a heating strip of about 10" or 11" with suction cups at both ends and an on-off switch on one end. It came with a lighter plug or could be hard-wired. I had a 6-volt one on my 1961 beetle rear window, wired to a dash switch. Remember that it doesn't have to get very warm -- just above freezing. Go to eBay and enter "demister" and you'll find a bunch of cool -- okay: warm -- options. If you are an "all-vintage" nut (as I am) you will also find some vintage accessory defrosters on ebay.de and ebay.co.uk . Until August 8, go to ebay.de and enter item no. 141364359015. You'll probably have to pay over $50 to get a genuine old-timer, though. If you don't mind a more modern upgrade, there are some rather nice 12v electric units with little internal fans that can be mounted inconspicuously below or alongside your rear window. They blow warm air over the glass and make quick work of all but the thickest ice. Generally under $20. Bert Knupp in Music City USA Subject: [vintagvw] Retrofitting 68 rear window My 66 is a daily driver in the Midwestern us. Fortunately, my daily commute is in our small suburban town. However; our winters can be harsh, and I no longer have a garage, just a carport. Is it possible to retrofit a 68 defrosting rear window system to my 66? The previous owner already converted it to 12 volts (not really well, though.)
