Volks, Back in the 1960s, good ol' J. C. Whitney sold sets of little bumper reinforcement bars for beetles. I had them on my 1961 after the first time my rear bumper got caved by a careless tap. They were H-profile steel bars that just bolted in between the bumpers and the brackets, invisible from the outside but adding to the stiffness - and keeping the bent bumper from crumpling the engine lid as well.
Are they available anywhere now? Anybody know whether they made them for the 1968-on box-beam bumpers?
