Volks,

I just received a note from an Austrian aircooled friend who tells me he’s
never seen a standard bug or bus with anything other than a chrome-plated horn
ring. The argent silver version we got on our USA-bound models, made in Emden,
apparently were not used on the Wolfsburg-built and Hannover-built bugs and
buses made for the European market.

Mike notes that his ’69 bug had the matte-silver horn ring, so the changeover
from chrome might well have been one of those mid-year running changes VW was
so famous for.

So now I don’t feel uneasy about using a chrome horn ring on my German-looking
1970 beetle.

Bert,
Not available anywhere that I know of. I knew about these differences and
remember my 69 Bug having the painted horn ring, but I wasn't aware of the date
of the changeover. I have one here somewhere. It's not perfect, tho. Maybe
you could re-finish yours again and add a clear satin or flat coat to prevent
it from wearing off too easily.

Volks,

The 1970 models of most Volkswagens in the USA got non-glare dashboard and
steering-wheel fittings. Chrome trim rings and horn rings were replaced by
non-shiny argent silver starting with Aug. 1969 to comply with new FMVSS rules.

Question: Die the European models of beetles and buses also get matte-silver
stuff, or only the USA models?

Most catalogs erroneously list chrome aftermarket horn rings as being for
1966-71 models, using the number 113 951 531 E CH. I’ll assume the CH
indicates chrome-plated. But 1970-71 USA models are supposed to have argent,
not chrome. I am currently using a horn ring repainted with a DupliColor silver
spray but it’s not wearing well.

Question: Does anybody know a source for matte-silver horn rings, speedometer
trim rings, horn buttons, etc.?
