I'm finally getting around to putting my engine together. I had the heads ( 40 x 35) rebuilt after discovering the valve stem ends nearly failed and was a short time away from a very bad day. I also put in a full flow oil cooler. My question: I had to use two shims, 0.06" and 0.03"; is it okay to use two shims or do I need to find 0.09" shims? Is 0.09" ridiculous or acceptable?
More info: I bought the engine new 30,000 miles ago and have not been happy with it. Poor performance from a 1915 with dual kadrons. The rebuilt heads, I am told, will be much better as the valve seat is now correct. The car is a '71 super beetle with a rebuilt transaxle. Thanks, Dean (all my other cars are Subarus) -- Dean G.
