Volks,
Help. I'm installing a new plastic glove box into a 1972 SuperBeetle, and trying to figure out the re-connection and routing of the hood-release )bonnet-release) cable. The old glove box was thoroughly rotted away, leaving only bits of fibreboard under some of the rivets. First, I disconnected the cable from the front hood (bonnet) latch. I drilled out the rivets, and successfully re-riveted the old release lever assembly into the new plastic glove box, using the #1 and #2 holes. The #3 hole (nearest the dashboard opening) holds a #8 (5 mm?) sheet metal screw that screws into a boss behind the dash, stabilizing the release lever assembly nicely. So far, so good. There is a small white plastic guide bracket on the cable guide tube very near the release lever assembly. It has two holes in it, one with a rivet and remains of fibreboard under it, indicating that it attached someplace to the old glovebox insert. Where? Where should this small flanged cable guide tube bracket be attached, and to what? Do I drill one (or two) new holes into the new plastic glove box insert to attach it? Where? Does it attach to the sheet metal behind the glove box? A picture on The Samba (attached) shows a cable guide bracket screwed onto the sheet metal, but the car is a standard beetle, not a Super (1302). Access to the area was easier with the old fuel tank; it's not easily accessible with the larger 1303 (Super) fuel tank, and it's hard to remove the fresh-air box. Advice will be greatly appreciated, as always.
