All these are good suggestions, i.e., using a headset or reverting to speaker 
phone mode.
There is another option for situations where you know the numbers in advance, 
e.g., access code numbers for a conference bridge.
Just add, in the phone number line a comma or two for a pause.  Then add the 
number sequence plus the # sign (generally it is the # sign).
This works like a charm.  In fact, I used it half an hour ago.
It is particularly useful when you call a particular number regularly and need 
to enter the same access code.
The problem I have with the methods already suggested is that I'm not quite 
fast enough with the touch screen dial pad.  Invariably, the access code prompt 
gives up with a "Sorry you are having trouble."  Then, it hangs up.
