There is a semiTether which combines parts of 5.0.1 and 5.1 to make something that will boot, but Safari won't work. If you're talking about the justboot batch in the redsn0w folder, you probably won't be able to just run it, you'll have to edit it to adjust the peramitors for the 3gs.
