Regarding the notification center, one solution is to lock the phone, unlock it, and on the unlock screen swipe/flick to the right to view current alerts/notifications.
Regarding the page turning gesture, I always have my fingers in a vertible line, but I heard from someone a few days ago that the gesture will work whether your fingers are top to bottom or side to side. I think as long as you've got 3 fingers on the screen and they're all moving to the left or right at once, it doesn't matter how you have them. It makes more sense to me to have my fingers vertically, like turning a page in a book.
