I was thinking for a local non internet app, but your suggestion sounds
interesting. By the way there is a free service
www.birthday alarm.com
that sends emails as a reminder. But for sure a local app is the easiest
and most comfortable way for me.

I have a .php script for that which sends emails on the required days. But
you need web hosting with apache servers.
