Sending an audio message is at this point only available for iMessage users which means the recipient also must use an iOS device and have iMessage enabled.
For those who say they can't get the phone o record when they raise it to their ear, make sure you haven't typed anything else yet, even a space will disable recording. You can check this by verifying that the button above the P on the keyboard says "Record" and not "Send". If you start a message, if the message is an iMessage and if nothing has been entered into the message field you will have the record button and raising the phone should start recording. Works for me every time although I don't like to use it because of the horrible audio quality of these messages. I am still wondering why Apple chooses to encode these in such poor quality, they sound like a message left on an old style answering machine from an analogue phone line and not like something which was digitally recorded and transmitted and compared to Whats App audio messages they are simply horrible. Let's all hope Apple will improve this.
