I think I've heard of an app for managing your battery life; if I remember
correctly, it was called Battery Doctor. There are some things that you can do
that will help reduce your battery drain. You'll want to turn on the reduce
motion setting in settings/general/accessibility. You'll also want to turn on
the reduce transparency setting in settings/general/accessibility/increase
contrast. Another potential battery hog is the background app refresh setting;
you'll want to turn that off, too, in settings/general/background app refresh.
There's also some settings in settings/privacy/location services that you'll
want to take a look at. iOS eight introduced some new controls for when apps
can use your location. You'll have to set this on an app-by-app basis, though,
as not every app supports it. The three options are to always use your
location, to never use your location, or to only use your location while using
the app.

As for controlling automatic downloads, you can specify what gets automatically
downloaded under settings/iTunes and App Store. There's a couple of sections in
there, so you'll want to make sure that you thoroughly explore everything. It's
not too big of a screen, though, so you shouldn't have too much trouble.

Thanks,
Ari
