I've never had a problem with the inexpensive film screen protectors used on my iPhone 5 and iPhone 6 but I always get an Apple Store or wireless phone store employee to install them. These film protectors offer minimal scratch resistance but I'm very careful with my iPhone and they work for me. The tempered glass protector Verizon was selling when I got my iPhone 6 cost about $40 which I thought was too pricey considering Apple designs the screen to be tough.
