Yes, but it only asks you for a password after your first encrypted backup. It won't prompt you for a password when doing subsequent backups, so if you forget that password over time, your backups are worthless.

Note this isn't a reason not to do an encrypted backup, but it is a reason to choose a password or figure out some way that you won't forget it over time.

would I be right in assuming that it would ask me for one before doing the backup?

    Simon,

I'll just state the obvious and urge you to be sure to keep up
with your encrypted backup password. Without the password, there
is no restoration of the backup to a device.

thanks for that, I will be going for the encrypted then, as I do
heavily rely on apps remembering details like that.

As I understand it, a standard backup will back up everything
on your device, except sensitive information. An encrypted
backup will back up everything, no matter what. Essentially,
then, restoring an encrypted backup will restore wifi
passwords, app logins, and other personal details; a standard
backup will restore the apps and data, but you'll have to sign
back into everything. I imagine I'm missing pieces, but that's
        the basic idea.

        hello all,

when backing up my iPhone, I get the option of an encrypted
backup. what are the differences between the standard, and
        the encrypted backup?
