Hi Alan, the only content you have access to as an iTunes Match subscriber
is content you already own, either through purchasing it from iTunes itself,
or by going through the quite lengthy process of uploading your own music to
it. It's called iTunes match because a series of algorithms try to match
what you upload with content iTunes has in the store. When it finds a match,
it replaces the copy you uploaded with its copy.
Tagging is key here. For example, a few years ago, I digitised my vinyl
collection. I tagged it correctly, that is to say I created tags for every
file with the artist, the title of the song, and the album it came from.
When I uploaded 25,000 songs to iTunes Match, which sadly is the maximum
content you're allowed to upload that wasn't purchased from Apple, i was
thrilled to note that a lot of the vinyl I uploaded was replaced by high
bit-rate, crackle free copies from Apple's library. Absolutely fantastic. So
I deleted my vinyl rips and downloaded the Apple versions. I get to keep
them, even if at some time in the future I choose not to renew my iTunes
Match subscription.
It's quite the bargain.

Okay thanks. That makes sense. You're entitled to get an iTunes Match
version of any music you're deemed to own but you're not entitled to
download a track you were eligible to listen to as a Match subscriber but
never purchased or already had in your personal library.

Hi alan,

iTunes Match is not like a typical streaming service. It basically lets you
treat the music you get from places other than iTunes as though it was
iTunes music. It goes through your music collection, and when it encounters
songs available in the iTunes store, it makes copies of those songs
available to you. When it encounters songs not available in the iTunes
store, it copies those songs to iCloud. If the copies of the songs in the
iTunes store that you have are of lower quality than those in the store, you
can delete your versions and replace them with the ones from the iTunes
store. You can stream or download any of the music to your iPhone. And if
you stop using the service, you still have all the music, including any
tracks that you downloaded from the iTunes store.

HTH,
Anna

Anna,

Maybe you can help me understand iTunes Match by answering this. I think of
Match as being a type of streaming music service. My understanding is that
music streaming services will let you play their content located in the
cloud as long as you're paying their subscription fee. I didn't think these
streaming services let you download anything to your device as you do when
you purchase digital songs.

Is my understanding correct?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

The music you bought from iTunes will still be available in iCloud. Once
iTunes Match expires, you'll need to sync with iTunes to get other music
onto your phone.

Hi Anna! Thank you very much for your help. Now once I turned off the
automatic renew for iTunes match it said that after my expiration date my
music will no longer be in the cloud. Do I need to download everything on
to my phone now before match expires?
