Sherrie,

You've sort of hit the nail on the head as to how manufacturers keep us
buying the latest technology. They no longer make the higher memory iDevices
in past models available anymore once the new versions come out every
September.

I understand that a 5S might meet your needs but would urge you to carefully
consider whether not to go ahead and take the plunge and upgrade to a higher
memory 6. If you want to use features such as Apple Pay and other upcoming
developments, at some point the 5S will come up short.

Regarding the capacity you really need, go to Settings, General, Usage, and
Manage Storage to check where the usage on your 5 actually is. Remember, any
BARD books you've got on your 5S will not be restored to your new device so
you'll need to make note of the titles and your reading position to get your
new device up to speed for BARD Mobile.

I feel the same way about using my devices for at least two years or longer
which is why I got an iPhone 6 with 128GB the last time I upgraded. Apple
has increased the size that apps can be and I've noticed in my Apps Store
upgrade list that new releases seem to be getting larger. Since the memory
decision is permanent as iPhones don't use SD cards or other external
memory, make sure you choose wisely.

Good luck.

Subject: Re: Question about restoring IOS 7 backup to IOS 8 phone

I would be happy to just upgrade from my 5 to a 5S since the 5S has the
thumbprint ID and the component that allows the step counting apps.. But
now I am told that the 5S does not come in 64 G any more. If I want to go to
the 5S it would have to be a 32G. That is the main reason I was considering
the 6 because it does come in 64G.

Cost is also a factor as the 32 G 5S is $99 and I could use my Juice pack
case. The 64 G 6 is $299 and a healthy chunk for a good case. And the
price of the Applecare, too.

So my second question was dumb I guess. An old backup of 45 g obviously
wouldn't fit on a 32 G new 5S phone., would it.

I could probably get by with 32 G if I left off a hundred or so apps I don't
use often and cut my Bard list way down. It will bear some more thought
since I will be locked into my decision for the next two years.

Thanks,

Sherrie Gosling

Subject: Re: Question about restoring IOS 7 backup to IOS 8 phone

Sherrie,

To answer your main question, yes, you can use iTunes to restore your iPhone
5 running iOS 7 backup to a new device running iOS 8. I did this very thing
when I got my new iPhone 6 in February. I restored the iTunes encrypted
backup of my iPhone 5 without any issues. The 5 was also running a version
of ios 8 but even though a restore doesn't allow you to roll back to an
older version of iOS, it will restore all your stuff from that older version
backup onto a device running a newer iOS version. You'll have all your Apps
and settings when you restore an encrypted backup with iTunes and they will
just be running on the new device with its version of iOS.

I will say that I too, use my wired earpods all the time and my headphone
jack on my old iPhone 5 failed on two different phones which had to be
replaced. When the second one was replaced under AppleCare in January, I
restored my iTunes encrypted backup from my old 5 running iOS 7 to the new
replacement 5 running iOS 8 without any problems.

It sounds as if the problems you're having with your failed earphones might
be a headphone jack issue.

If you get an iPhone 6, I'd strongly recommend you get at least 64GB of
memory. As Daniel said, the 6 doesn't come in a 32GB model, just 16, 64, and
128GB models.

Good luck if you upgrade. Although I still feel ios 7 was a more consistent
performer than iOS 8, I am loving my iPhone 6 running iOS 8.3.

I have an iPhone 5 running IOS 7. I love the IOS 7 and would never upgrade
but I will probably get an iPhone 6 because the 5 is having a few problems
such as totally shutting down unexpectedly with no warning when battery is
still well above the 20%. Also earphone problems.

My question is will I be able to use the restore function in iTunes to put
my IOS 7 backup onto the 6 running IOS 8?

I plan to keep the 5 for a backup and do not want to upgrade it to IOS 8
before backing it up as the 5 does everything I want right now.

Too bad it is having issues. I am still trying to decide if the fact that
only old wired earphones with no mic will work on the 5 for now is
bothersome enough to justify upgrading to a 6. Since I constantly listen to
BARD books this is a biggie. And yes, I have tested numerous wired earphones
with mic and they work in other gadgets and not in my 5. By not work I mean
no sound at all. For the last two years the Apple earpods would not produce
any sound but I ordered Samsung ones that worked fine. Now they won't
produce any sound either. Reduced to using old earbuds that require me to
constantly remove the phone from my pocket to do all the things I formerly
did with the mic buttons.

I have a Juice pack case for the 5 and as long as I remember to give the
phone a charge before it gets anywhere near low it seems not to shut down.

I wanted a 5S but the salesman at Verizon said they do not come in 64 G any
more and I don't think I could get by with 32 G. So it will have to be a 6 I
guess.

So back to my original question:

Will an IOS 7 backup restore onto an IOS 8 phone?

Question 2

If I did go to a 32 G model would I have to set it up from scratch since my
iPhone 5 backup has at least 45-50 G of content?

Thanks in advance,

Sherrie Gosling
