If you don't dim the backlight, it will slowly dim to off when the keyboard is not used for a couple of minutes or so. Then when you begin to use it again, the backlight will come back on. If you want it off while you are using it, then press the sixth key on the top row four of five times. After doing that, I think it will stay off until you turn the keyboard off and then on again.
I don't know of any way to turn the backlighting off permanently.
