This may be old news to some or a reminder to others, but it was new to me.
You can delete a text message from the locked screen. Just flip up or down on the message until you get to delete. All this time, I have been opening the message going back a screen to the list of message recipients and then closing the app so that I didn't show a message as unread. Hope it helps someone else.
