Let me say that I own neither of the two, and have only read about both.
So far, I can think of two major differences.
1.: The smart beetle has six dot buttons that can be used for writing.
The vario ultra has eight. Soo if you want to regularly write computer
braille, the vario might be the better choice for you.
w2.: The beetle can also be paired as a keyboard. Although I have to
admit I don't really understand what's so special about that, since you
can use commands for controlling your iphone with other brailledisplays
as well.
Something else I just remembered: From waht I read, it's pretty easy to
change languages and braille tables with the smart beetle. So if you
read more than one language you might like that.
