Unfortunately, the ipod touch 5th and 6th generation have no flash. Having the
light source like the StandScan realy would help.

The best description I can think of is that it is like a wide diving board.
The stand is about 9 inches wide. The phone sits on the platform with about an
inch of it sticking out over the edge.

So, if you are in a room with half-way decent lighting, plenty of room light
gets in since most of the page is exposed. If the only light source was
directly behind the stand, it might cast a shadow, but I can’t think of any
lighting situations that would be like that.

Of course, you also have the flash on the phone to compensate if needed.

I’ve not had any trouble at all with lighting.

Here is a link to his instructions for setting it up. I don’t know if this
will help.

Richard,

How does the Fopydo stand do with allowing enough light to get to the page
since it doesn't use an external light source?

The Fopydo has the most adjustability (if that is a word.)

You can easily raise it up from the default about 10.5 inches above the page
to 14 inches above the page for legal sized documents.

The StandScan is not adjustable and is about 11.5 or 12 inches above the page.

The ScanJig’s maximum distance is about 11 inches, but can be adjusted to be
closer.

I think the question is not about a specific stand, but which one will offer
the largest area of scannability based on the position of the phone. Since most
offer optimal placement for the phone I'm fairly certain that which one is used
will make very little difference because of the flexibility of the camera and
the ability of the software to scan a somewhat larger area than what might be
expected.

I too highly recommend the Fopydo, partly because it is the most portable,
but also he is working on an attachment that will make scanning books much
easier to go with the stand.

He is hoping to offer the attachment for around $10. So, between the $12
for the stand and $10 more for this nifty attachment, plus any shipping, you
will have a very powerful scanning setup.

I have seen the first two prototypes of the attachment and am excited about
it coming to the market.

I have no connection to the company. I just happened to get in touch with
him early on in his development and got to put in my two cents worth.

    Stay tuned.

      Hi Christina.

You can use a braille display instead of a bluetooth keyboard.

I highly recommend the fopydo stand. It is rather cheap and easy to use.

      Best regards Annie.

        Jonathan,

Do you also recommend purchasing a bluetooth Keyboard to use along
with the Fopydo stand? I listened to the applevis podcast where they
demonstrated using KNFB Reader 2.0 in stand mode and they used it with a
bluetooth keyboard. It got me to thinking that it must be impossible or
difficult to control the app since the iDevice will be face down. What do you
think? I wasn’t really wanting to buy a stand and a keyboard. :)

        Thanks,

        Christina

Hi Don, I don't know if it's the best or not, but I bought a Fopydo,
which is very reasonably priced, and am happy with it. I travelled with it
recently and it was great for quickly dealing with things like the compendium
in my hotel room.
