Just so you know, if you call 911, hang up even before it dialing, it goes
through anyway. I did this one time when I had my mother ill. I dialed 9121
hung it as fast as I dialed it and they called me back. Andy

Subject: Calling 9 1 1 with SIRI

Hello,

A year or two ago there was a discussion about how to best call 9 1 1 in a true
emergency situation. Many on the list expressed concern that their dialing
skills are maybe not so good and they were afraid that in a real emergency and
under a lot of stress they may not be able to quickly bring up the emergency
call screen from the lock screen and dial 9 1 1. At the time various apps were
discussed as literally dozens of them exist to help with this. Some are very
basic and others offer more features like dialing other emergency contacts or
making it easy to send one’s GPS coordinates to the 9 1 1 operator.

When this discussion took place, it was not possible to call 9 1 1 by telling
SIRI to “Call 9 1 1”. SIRI would inform you at that point that she couldn’t do
that. Recently I heard a Podcast where a situation was mentioned where a young
guy got pinned under his car when he was doing repairs and his jack collapsed.
Apparently he had his iPhone in his pocket and was somehow able to activate
SIRI and shout “Call 9 1 1”. My first thought was that this is nonsense since
it doesn’t work. Then I thought that maybe things changed so I simply tried it.
I told SIRI to “Call 9 1 1” and surprise surprise, SIRI replied “Calling
emergency services in 5 seconds”. Of course at that point I quickly hung up
since I didn’t really want to call, but it is good to know that one can now use
SIRI in case of emergency to reach a 9 1 1 operator. I think the 5 second delay
is a good way to prevent accidental calls and it allows one to try it out. Just
make sure you have a reliable way to hang up before the call goes through,
probably best with the Earpods where you can simply press the hang up button on
the headset remote.

Regards,

Sieghard
