Hi Alan,

Both Red Laser and Digit-Eyes do access databases for this type of information.
However, not all products are in these databases, for example, here in Canada
certain grocery chains may have products with bilingual packaging (English and
French) and said product may have a barcode which is not listed in these
databases. I believe Digit-Eyes accesses several databases and it probably is
about as good as it gets and that is why you can submit a product name and
other information for products which are not found in the official databases.

Regards,

Sieghard

Subject: Scanning App for Collecting Product Info History - REcommendations and
My Experience

Hello List,

Before asking my question, I want to share my experience with scanning apps in
order to grab product info for purposes of saving for future reference. I've
had great success with Red Laser and also use Digit-Eyes. Once I've found a
product that I believe I'll be purchasing in the future, I like to scan it with
an accessible app in order to capture info such as product name, etc. that I
can later reference through a history button that I can use to job my memory at
shopping time.

My issue is that quite often with food items especially, Red Laser will scan
the barcode quickly but have no information about the product other than the
barcode numbers. When this happens, I get pretty much the same thing with
Digit-Eyes, no real product info other than the barcode number.

Does anyone know where these apps get their product info after they scan in the
item's barcode? I would have thought there is some sort of centralized database
but I'm curious why some products have their info there but others don't. I
would really like an accessible app that has access to an extensive grocery
item database because those are the items I constantly get little info about
when scanning them with Red Laser. The ability to get nutritional info from one
of these apps would be a bonus.

Any help with my questions and any suggestions about an accessible app that
would provide product info that could be saved upon scanning would be greatly
appreciated.
